Effects of Smartphone Use and Television Viewing on Standardized BP Measurement: The SCREENS-BP Study

Source: ClinicalTrials.gov · Last updated 29 Oct 2026

Brief summary (registry, in English)

The SCREENS-BP study is a randomized crossover study evaluating the effects of smartphone use and television viewing on blood pressure (BP) measurements in 96 adults. Each participant will undergo four sets of automated BP measurements under standardized conditions. The first three sets will be performed in random order: without distractions, while actively using a smartphone, and while watching a standardized television video. A fourth set without distractions will be performed at the end. Each set will consist of a two-minute walk, five minutes of rest followed by three BP measurements taken at one-minute intervals, without staff present. The primary outcome is the within-participant difference in systolic BP between each distraction condition and the reference BP, calculated from the mean of the two sets without distractions. Secondary outcomes include differences in diastolic BP and heart rate. Exploratory analyses will assess potential differences according to participant characteristics. The findings will help determine whether common technological distractions influence BP measurement accuracy and inform recommendations for BP measurement in clinical, home, and research settings.
