Digital Reinforcement of Motivational Interviewing Micro-Skills Among Primary Care Healthcare Professionals

Bridging the Knowing-Doing Gap: Implementing a Structured Reinforcement Programme on Micro-Skills in Motivational Interviewing for Primary Care Healthcare Professionals in Control of Blood Pressure Among Patients With Hypertension

Source: ClinicalTrials.gov · Last updated 6 Nov 2026

Brief summary (registry, in English)

The goal of this clinical trial is to improve hypertensive patients' systolic blood pressure (SBP) through increased application of MI micro-skills by mitigating known implementation barriers through a structured reinforcement programme delivered via digital nudges to Primary Care Healthcare Professionals (HCPs). Secondary goals include examining implementation outcome measures through validated instruments, and participants' confidence levels in the application of MI that will be measured by a pre-and-post intervention short survey. The main questions it aims to answer are: * In primary care HCPs previously trained in MI, does undergoing a structured reinforcement program on MI micro-skills, compared to no reinforcement, result in lower patient SBP within 17 weeks of intervention commencement? * How did intervention group participants' anticipated acceptability, appropriateness and feasibility compare with their perceptions after experiencing the intervention? * Does confidence in the application of motivational interviewing (MI) change following the intervention among healthcare professionals in the intervention group? Researchers will compare HCPs assigned to the intervention group with those assigned to the control group to determine whether structured reinforcement improves MI practice and is associated with differences in patient blood pressure outcomes. Participants will: * Be randomly assigned to either an intervention group or a control group. * Complete electronic questionnaires at baseline and after the intervention period. * If assigned to the intervention group, participate in a community of practice through the Teams channel and receive a structured reinforcement programme consisting of digital nudges delivered through a Microsoft Teams channel over 17 weeks. * The digital nudges consist of bite-sized infographic-based learning materials focused on MI micro-skills and key principles. Patient blood pressure data from eligible patients with hypertension managed by participating healthcare professionals will be extracted from routine clinical records in a de-identified manner for analysis.
